How can young people from different backgrounds and experiences work together to make positive changes in their communities?
Chapter objectives
- Learn about how young people from different backgrounds have worked to promote positive social change in their communities.
- Understand strategies that promote students’ well-being as they work together to address shared concerns.
- Explore strategies for registering voters and contributing to positive social change.
This interactive chapter shows how young people from diverse backgrounds can collaborate for positive social change. Students will explore issues youth organizers have addressed—including education, well-being, immigrant rights, voting—and examine how identity, power, and privilege shape these efforts. Drawing on what they learn about themselves and others, students will better understand how to build alliances and foster multiracial solidarity. They will also engage in activities that support their growth as leaders. The chapter highlights the role of grassroots organizing and illustrates how high-school–aged Asian American and Pacific Islander leaders have influenced policies and encouraged civic participation, even before reaching voting age.
